Just a day after walking free from prison, former Prime Minister Moussa Mara is calling for humanity, empathy and forgiveness across Mali.

Former Malian Prime Minister Moussa Mara has made a passionate appeal for national unity and reconciliation following his release from prison.

Cbinews.tv reports that Mara was released on Saturday 1 August after serving a one-year prison sentence for showing support on social media for detained opposition politicians.

His return was met with celebration as relatives, political figures and supporters gathered at his family home in Bamako Commune 4 to welcome him.

In a video posted on Facebook a day after his release, Mara struck a conciliatory tone and urged Malians to show greater compassion to one another.

He said: I pray to the Lord to grant us more humanity and more empathy towards one another, so that we can achieve true unity and genuine reconciliation.

He added: I forgive, and forgive me.

Mara also used his first public address to express concern for his lawyer and fellow politician, Me Mountaga Tall, who has not been seen since he was abducted from his home by armed masked men in early May. His remarks have highlighted ongoing concerns over enforced disappearances and the political climate in Mali.

Neither Mara nor his supporters have indicated whether he intends to return to active politics. As reported by cbinews.tv, his future remains uncertain after Mali's ruling military junta dissolved all political parties and political organisations on 13 May 2025, a move that has significantly restricted political activity in the country.
