Movement on one of Nigeria's busiest highways came to a standstill after torrential rain; now the Federal Government is stepping in.

If you ply the Benin-Sagamu Expressway regularly, you would have felt it. The recent downpour did not just flood communities; it took over parts of the highway itself.

Well, some relief might be on the way.

The Federal Ministry of Works says it has kicked off a full assessment of the flood-affected sections of the expressway. The inspection was carried out on Monday at the Ore corridor in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, who was represented by the Federal Controller of Works in Ondo State, Engr Olajide Hussein, three spots have been identified as the major trouble areas. They are Agofure at Km 100, Adolak Junction near the Ore Flyover Bridge at Km 107, and the Agric Section at Km 117.

Umahi explained that the team is not just looking at the surface water. They are running a proper hydraulic evaluation of existing culverts and drainage channels to trace where the overflow is coming from.

The plan? Targeted engineering interventions, including potentially resizing cross-culverts and desilting blocked channels, to stop this from happening again.

He noted that the intense rainfall being witnessed across the country, widely linked to climate change impacts, has led to flooding along several road corridors, and the Ministry is moving swiftly to address it.

The Minister also assured road users that safety on the highway remains a priority and sympathised with commuters and residents who were affected by the flooding.
