Just when it looked like Nigeria had done enough to secure victory in Warsaw, Poland struck with virtually the last kick of the match to deny the Super Eagles a memorable win.
According to cbinewstv, the Super Eagles were left frustrated on Wednesday night after Poland scored a dramatic late equaliser to force a 2-2 draw in an international friendly at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw.
Nigeria looked set to claim a hard-fought victory over the European side, but Przemysław Wiśniewski broke Nigerian hearts by finding the net deep into stoppage time, ensuring both teams shared the spoils.
The Super Eagles got off to a bright start and took the lead in the 23rd minute. Terem Moffi provided the breakthrough with a well-taken effort, giving Eric Chelle’s men a deserved advantage.
However, Poland responded just before the break when Kacper Potulski levelled the scores, sending both sides into half-time locked at 1-1.
With the match finely balanced, Nigeria made several changes at the start of the second half. Philip Otele replaced Akor Adams, while Semi Ajayi came on for Emmanuel Fernandez. Bruno Onyemaechi, Paul Onuachu and Calvin Bassey were also introduced as Chelle looked to freshen up his side.
The substitutions appeared to pay off as Nigeria regained the lead. Paul Onuachu calmly converted from the penalty spot to put the Super Eagles 2-1 ahead and seemingly on course for victory.
But football can be cruel. Just seconds away from the final whistle, Poland launched one last attack and Wiśniewski fired home in added time to rescue a draw for the hosts.
The result brought back memories of the last meeting between both nations in March 2018, when Nigeria secured a famous 1-0 victory over Poland ahead of the FIFA World Cup. On that occasion, former Chelsea winger Victor Moses scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot.
Attention now turns to Nigeria’s next friendly fixture against Portugal on 10 June. Although the Super Eagles will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the matches provide Eric Chelle and his coaching staff with an opportunity to assess tactics, test new players and continue preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
While the result may feel like two points dropped, the encounter offered valuable lessons as Nigeria continues to build for the future.
