This follows four shark attacks in two days in the area..
Authorities in New South Wales have closed dozens of beaches after four shark attacks that occurred over just two days - an unusually high frequency that has raised significant concerns in the local community.
The attacks took place at different locations along a stretch of coastline in New South Wales, eastern Australia.
On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, locals at Dee Why Beach, located on the northern beaches of Sydney, responded to the widespread beach closures.
"I'm afraid to go into the water; the whole beach is closed from here up to Avalon for nearly 48 hours now," said resident Jimmy.
"It's a terrible situation, but people along these beaches are well aware that incidents like this can happen. They're conscious of the risks and take necessary precautions. When it's announced that the beaches are closed, everyone respects that," noted tourist Rose.
Resident Hana shared her mixed feelings, saying, "I feel sad for the people who were attacked. It's a wake-up call to the actual dangers. But, you know, sharks are at home here; we're the intruders. Incidents like this are part of living in Australia."
On the question of prevention, she added, "Is there a better way to face the situation? It's too late when an incident occurs. Prevention is better than cure. Shark nets should have been installed beforehand."
Authorities closely monitored the situation, and beaches remain closed until surveillance indicated a reduced risk of shark activity.
